Are you a Reader or a Writer?Ceci would categorize herself as both a reader and a writer. She started reading as a way to communicate with her family. Since most of them were bilingual, reading was one of the easiest ways to learn and convey what she wanted to say. She’d sit and watch as her family laughed about things in the newspaper, or how they would sit in one spot and read forever. Although her family valued time together more than reading, she valued how the words glided off of the page and into her brain. She’d see woman at the store reading a magazine, her aunts and uncles reading the newspaper, her father enjoying a murder mystery book, or even her mother, who spent most of her time gardening, reading a romantic story. She would see all these people enjoying the written word, and would want to be like the happy people she saw. Ceci knew people read for all different reasons, whether that be to learn, to enjoy, to pass a class. But she also always knew it took more to be a good reader. Ceci always knew you had to enjoy whatever it was that you were reading to be considered a good reader. The reason Ceci saw herself as a good reader was because how invested she would become in the story. She would quickly fall in love with the way the word graced themselves onto the page. Each page would draw her attention in. Every so often the type of literature Ceci enjoys changes, occasionally it could be romantic books or it could just as easily be science fiction. Currently she is enjoying the teenage drama section of novels. At home, Ceci reads nearly nightly. She enjoys sitting down with a good book and enjoying how it comes so simply, but if it is a book that does not capture her attention, her ADHD takes control and she finds it hard to sit still. She saw reading as a step into the direction of writing.
By reading all the time, Ceci would pick up ways to write. She began her experience with the written word carefully, like a bird learning to fly. She started out writing in kindergarten like most kids do, only quickly she realized it was something she loved to do. There isn’t a thing about writing that Ceci dislikes. She mainly likes the fact that she can make that book into whatever it is that she wants it to be. She doesn’t have to go and find what it is that interests her, she can simply create it out of nothing. The reason people write can be to escape their lives, to learn about themselves, to explore the world, or to even just have fun. Ceci believes that she uses all of those things to driver herself in writing daily. Although she is still only a student, Ceci believes she is a good writer if it is something she enjoys writing. To be not only a good writer, but a great one, Ceci believes that understanding the topic is vital. If someone doesn't understand what it is that they're writing, they could change topics, lose focus and never finish, or simply never start due to a lack of information and interest. Another thing that drives good writing, is if it is the right type for the writer. For instance, Ceci enjoys fiction, poetry, novels, short stories, and many other types of writing, but one type of writing she doesn't enjoy is reflection pieces. She prefers to live in the moment and to not dwell on the past. It takes time for most people to learn to love writing, but for Ceci it came naturally. She has always and will always love to write. |
